United States v. Page
What's at Stake
Representing the League of Women Voters of California, the League of Women Voters of Orange Coast, and the League of Women Voters of North Orange County, the ACLU Voting Rights Project, ACLU of Northern California, and ACLU of Southern California have filed a motion to intervene in a federal lawsuit over the federal government’s demand that Orange County, California turn over unredacted voter information, including voters’ sensitive personal data such as drivers’ license numbers and partial social security numbers.
Summary
The ACLU, ACLU of Northern California, and ACLU of Southern California have filed a motion to intervene as Defendants in a suit brought by the Department of Justice against the Orange County, California Registrar of Voters, who refused to turn over voter file information except as required by law. The motion to intervene was filed on behalf of the League of Women Voters of California (LWVC) and two local chapters in Orange County, the League of Women Voters of Orange Coast (LWVOC) and the League of Women Voters of North Orange County (LWVNOC). LWVC has also moved to intervene in a related case, United States v. Weber, in which the Department of Justice seeks California’s entire statewide unredacted voter file. Concerns over unsubstantiated mass voter challenges and misuse of sensitive personal information have heightened the concerns of LWVC, LWVOC, and LWVNOC, organizations that conduct voter registration and provide voter education in Orange County and throughout California, and support the passage of laws that protect voter privacy.
If intervention is granted, the civil rights groups will seek to prevent the federal government from forcing Orange County to turn over unredacted voter information and to protect sensitive data within the voter rolls.
