United States v. Weber
What's at Stake
Representing the League of Women Voters of California, the ACLU Voting Rights Project, ACLU of Northern California, and ACLU of Southern California have filed a motion to intervene in a federal lawsuit over the federal government’s demand that California turn over its entire voter registration rolls, including with voters’ sensitive personal data such as drivers’ license numbers and partial social security numbers.
Summary
The ACLU, ACLU of Northern California, and ACLU of Southern California have filed a motion to intervene as Defendants in a suit brought by the Department of Justice against the California Secretary of State, who refused to turn over voter file information except as required by law. The motion to intervene was filed on behalf of the League of Women Voters of California. Concerns over unsubstantiated mass voter challenges and misuse of sensitive personal information have heightened the concerns of the League, who through their voter registration work, add people’s information to the voter roll, and who has worked to support the passage of laws that protect voter privacy.
The district court granted the League of Women Voters of California's intervention in November 2025.
Update: On January 15, 2026, the court dismissed DOJ's lawsuit against the State of California. The court granted both the State's motion to dismiss as well as a motion filed by the ACLU and its California affiliates on behalf of the League of Women Voters of California.
