ATLANTA 鈥 The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided an elections office in Fulton County, GA, this week to seize ballots as part of President Trump鈥檚 ongoing fixation on his 2020 election loss 鈥 results that have been verified in multiple state and federal investigations. The raid comes amid ongoing abuses of power by the Trump administration designed to undermine democracy and erode public trust in our elections, including overreach by the Department of Justice (DOJ) into sensitive voter data. "President Trump has sent his democracy disrupting machine to Atlanta,鈥 said Andrea Young, executive director of the ACLU of Georgia. 鈥淭here is no legitimate law enforcement purpose for the FBI raid of the Fulton County Elections Center. The FBI is being used to pursue a vendetta against the voters of Fulton County, where Trump has never received more than 27 percent of the vote. As we have for more than 60 years, the ACLU of Georgia will use all of our tools to fight for the rights of voters.鈥 鈥淭his raid is further proof that the Trump administration is desperate not only to sow distrust in our democratic process, but to distract from its egregious abuse of power,鈥 said Sophia Lin Lakin, director of the Voting Rights Project at the ACLU. 鈥淰oters across the country are outraged at the violence inflicted on our communities, most visibly in Minnesota, by immigration enforcement and federal agents. It is no surprise that the Trump administration is looking to manufacture reasons to challenge votes, change election rules, and kick voters off the rolls in 2026. The ACLU will remain steadfast in our efforts to stop these efforts to dismantle our democracy.鈥 The ACLU of Georgia responded to the January 28 raid by deploying trained legal observers and Voter Access Project team members to serve as neutral witnesses, documenting events as they occurred. While they are often present at protests, their role is essential whenever government actions may discourage civic participation or undermine public confidence. The Trump administration continues to ramp up its attacks on voters and state election boards. U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi has appointed the U.S. attorney responsible for the Fulton County raid to conduct investigations of election officials nationwide. And the Department of Justice continues to demand full voter data files from more than 20 states, a move challenged by the ACLU in over a dozen lawsuits.Affiliate: Georgia -

California V. Trump (amicus). Explore Case.California v. Trump (Amicus)
On March 25, 2025, in a sweeping and unprecedented Executive Order, President Trump attempted to usurp the power to regulate federal elections from Congress and the States. Among other things, the Executive Order directs the Election Assistance Commission鈥攁n agency that Congress specifically established to be bipartisan and independent鈥攖o require voters to show a passport or other citizenship documentation in order to register to vote in federal elections. If implemented, the Executive Order would threaten the ability of millions of eligible Americans to register and vote and upend the administration of federal elections.Status: Ongoing
